Adding salt to your machine is the only maintenance you’ll have to do to a Kinetico water softener. Block salt is the most convenient, mess-free way to add salt to your machine.

What is block salt?

Block Salt is simply food-grade salt that has been compacted into convenient blocks enabling you to load easily into your water softener unit. Kinetico block salt is ergonomically designed with an easy-grip design so you can load effortlessly.

Why do I need salt for my water softener?

All water softener systems require you to add salt into the unit on an infrequent basis. The resin beads in the softener cylinders hold on to the calcium and magnesium (limescale) as the water passes through. These beads eventually become saturated with these mineral elements and the calcium and magnesium need to be washed off. This is what the salt does, mixing with water to clean or ‘regenerate’ the unit so it can start again. The beauty of the Kinetico twin-tank system is that while this process is happening, you’ll still get a continuous flow of soft water as the regeneration takes place in one tank, while the other tank continues to provide you with soft water. In single tank systems, the softening process has to stop while the cylinders regenerate often letting hard water into your system.

How much salt do I need?

We recommend that you’ll need one block of water softener salt for every member of your household per month. If you have four family members in the home, you’ll need approximately four blocks of salt per month putting in two at a time.

How often should I change the salt?

Depending on usage, we advise that every week you simply open the front cover of the machine to check the salt. You’ll see the salt blocks will go down as the system draws the salt for the regeneration process. When the block is at a very low level, this is the time to put new ones in.
