Different filtration systems work in different ways, but the core process is much the same: mains water passes through one or more specialised filter materials that trap or absorb unwanted particles.

Carbon water filtration uses activated carbon, a highly porous material, to attract and remove contaminants. This process works by adsorption, where contaminants are trapped within the pores of the carbon and then flushed out.

Reverse osmosis is a water filtration method in which pressure is used to force water through a semi-permeable membrane, separating water molecules from impurities. This is highly effective at removing a wide range of contaminants – including nitrates, heavy metals, fluoride, and microplastics – making it one of the most thorough filtrations options available.

Some water filtration systems are designed to work with a dedicated tap for filtered water. This helps preserve the life of the filter by ensuring it’s only used where purified water is needed – typically for drinking, cooking, or making hot drinks.
Filtered taps are available as standalone 1-way options or as part of 3- or 4-way taps that also provide hot, cold, and even softened water.
