What is a reverse osmosis water filter system?

Reverse osmosis works by pushing your water through a semi-permeable membrane under pressure. The membrane allows water molecules through while blocking dissolved solids, bacteria and other unwanted particles including microplastics and PFAS, so what comes out the other side is some of the purest drinking water available at home.

Unlike a standard carbon filter, which mainly improves taste and removes chlorine, RO filtration tackles a much wider range of contaminants. It’s the reason reverse osmosis is considered the gold standard for home drinking water filtration.

What is filtered out?

A Kinetico reverse osmosis system is built to remove a genuinely wide range of contaminants, not just the ones you can taste or smell. Depending on your system, this includes bacteria, cysts, pesticides, nitrates, lead, chlorine, microplastics and PFAS, the man-made “forever chemicals” found in everyday items like non-stick cookware and waterproof fabrics.

Does reverse osmosis remove minerals from my water?

Reverse osmosis removes minerals along with contaminants, which is part of what makes the filtration so thorough. If you’d prefer to keep beneficial calcium minerals in your drinking water, the K5 Pure+ includes a Mineral Plus cartridge designed to add them back in.

Reverse Osmosis Filtration FAQs

Find answers to the most commonly asked questions about reverse osmosis water filters for the home.

We’ve had a Kinetico water softener literally for decades and been extremely pleased with them. Once installed and apart from adding salt blocks you can forget them and just enjoy the soft water. Our current system includes a reverse osmosis water filter and is on an annual maintenance contract. It’s just been serviced by Charlie who was punctual, polite and pleasant, and serviced both softener and filter in a timely and tidy way. He also advised needed its membrane changed. All good and a job done well. Very pleased.
